you should perhaps consider having some redundancy on your transaction log drive, personally I would raid5 all your drives and have a hot spare. I don't think that transaction logs on the same raid system as your data will cause major performance problems because you have multiple spindles and disk heads, so the contention between writing the log and the data won't cause thrashing. Look out for write caches that are volatile, you want all your data written out to the disk if there is a power cut.
Build it and test it, your requirements might mean different optimisations work better for you.
